Frequently Asked Questions

How can I judge quality in play equipment?
Not easy and camera lenses can fool all of us! But it is most important. Look at/ask about the sizes of the main timbers. How substantial are they? Are they of a shape and design that is likely to crack and splinter? How many coats of stain or lacquer have been applied? Has the timber been fully pressure treated? Are components such as swings, chains, slides, swing bearings, bridge chains etc, of a commercial grade? Are you comparing size for size? It is essential to check this out. Are all corners smooth and well rounded or are they jagged and hazardous? Are all fixings concealed or are they protruding, unsightly and dangerous? Are all metal components galvanized and power coated? Has design been compromised at the expense of economy?

What about safety?
This is a foremost consideration. Our commercial grade products are manufactured in accordance with European standards EN1176 and EN1177. Our residential items are CE certified, but they also conform to the very strict educational/commercial standards. These standards and certifications are your guarantee of Timberline dedication to the safety of the children in your care.

Are Timberline products guaranteed?
Yes, very much so. We operate a full 10 year guarantee against any form of timber degradation. Also we offer a 1 year guarantee against faulty materials and workmanship on all products including safety surfacing.

Will the timber rot?
No. The timber is vacuum pressure impregnated which is a complicated description for a process in which the timber is stacked inside a pressure vessel and liquid is sucked into the heart of the timber. The liquid being a fungicidal preservative. Most good quality outdoor timber is treated this way for example fencing poles, telegraph poles etc.

Is there an arsenic risk?
No, there are several methods of treatment of timber... some of them having a degree of arsenic. We use the Celpruf system which is a completely clear treatment, free of arsenic and eminently suitably for child use.

How sturdy is the equipment?
We use laminated 4" x 4" timbers on corner posts. We use substantial 1.25" thick decking. Cross members are 6" x 1". Roof supports 4" x 2". Roof decking 6" x 1". 13mm galvanised coach screws throughout. The Woodlander series uses curved legs laminated by ourselves to offer a 6" sq cross section. In brief, our products are extremely stable.

How long does it take to install?
Obviously depending on the complexity of the equipment but with the exception of the safety surfacing, the majority of our items take no more than a day to install. Sandboxes, Play Boats, Picnic Houses take a matter of 2-3 hours to install assuming good site conditions. Complicated 3 Tower Woodlanders systems can take up to two days, however.

What finishes are available?
For our residential/domestic product range we offer a standard two-tone brown stain but with a sober dark green roof. All other items depicted in the brochure e.g. play boats, sandboxes, picnic houses and the whole range of Karenna to Quadrenna can be offered either as two-tone brown, brown and green or brightly lacquered. The choice is yours, but the price remains the same whichever option you choice.

Does the price include delivery and installation?
Yes... with the exception of: 1. Orders with the total value of under £1,250 excluding VAT. 2. Swings. 3. Trim Trail Items. But the great majority of our prices do include delivery and installation on the UK mainland. However, in the case of the south-west of England, Scotland and Wales, charges may be levied to compensate for additional installation charges due to greater distances from our factory.

Will the equipment need maintenance?
All products require regular routine maintenance in accordance with our standard maintenance instructions. Timberline publishes recommended maintenance instructions which are dispatched to customers after installation. All our equipment is manufactured to the highest standards. We have deliberately chosen a timber which after vacuum pressure treatment, will retain its original structure for many, many years of service. At our factory we treat the product with 3 coats 1 primer and 2 top coats...using ‘Sadolin' preservative. Sadolin have an excellent name for quality timber preservatives and the product is available at most DIY/Hardware stores. A top coat should be applied say every 12 months but the cost and time involved should be minimal. Identical comments relate to the lacquered/colour versions.
